Our Right to Life endorsed Congressman, Bart Stupak says that while he is “leading the charge” to prevent any health care reform from using tax payer funds for abortion, if health care reform legislation makes it to the floor of the U.S. Congress and includes public funding for abortions, he will support it.

Stupak was asked at a recent 1st district town-hall meeting held in Cheboygan Michigan, that if his attempts to get public funding for abortion removed from the health care bill are unsuccessful, if he would still vote yes for the bill. And his answer to the disappointment of the crowd was: “If I had a chance to vote my conscience I probably would not. I probably would still vote for the health care bill at the end of the day.”

Isaac,

I'm a former constituent or Rep. Stupak's. Ultimately, I think most all of the "pro-life" dems will vote for this monstrosity. Visit www.rightmichigan.com for a great article debunking the myth of conservative Democrats.

Wouldn't universal health care cut down on the number of abortions since young mothers who wanted to keep their babies but couldn't afford the medical bills that come with giving birth in a hospital would now be covered?

I agree that abortions shouldn't be provided with public funds since it's a morally indefensible procedure, but I'm pretty sure UHC is a win for the pro-life crowd.

Seriously I'm pretty sure that UHC would cut down on the number of abortions. As it stands an uninsured young woman can pay around $500 for an abortion or $9,000 to give birth in a hospital ($11,000 if you need a C-section!). I'm not saying every abortion is done for economic purposes, but you'd be a fool to think that $8,500 dollars hasn't put more than a few prospective mothers over the line.

Please someone tell me why I'm wrong I know that as a good Republican I should be against UHC, but also abortion... I can't handle the cognitive dissonance... I can feel my fear of the unknown turning into curiosity... constant cynicism turning into cautious optimism... xenophobia turning into an ability to see foreigners and illegal aliens as real people... I'm even starting to think that poor people aren't necessarily poor because they're lazy... please help me

Is this what it feels like... to turn liberal?

Stupak, it seems, has been listening too much to Obama during these negotiations over the health care bill. In a search for middle ground, it seems he has made a key error on principles that I expect will lead to other pro-life groups and pro-life Democrats criticizing him, even as they support his pro-life amendment. However, I do not think it is fair to extrapolate Stupak's new position to all conservative and pro-life Democrats. Many, after all, voted against the health care bill even with the amendment, while others most surely would not have voted for it all if not for the Stupak amendment.

An error in principles? Perhpas his principles are better founded than you think. His preference would be pro-life. But, certainly UHC is not forcing abortions on anyone, nor is the current policy. You would prefer your morality to be forced unwilling on others? Would you have that done to you. Perhaps in the case of UHC this individual believes that despite his issues with such a thing, he may believe that it's benefits outweigh its negatives. Perhaps you should concern yourself more with that, than his compromise on one issue. Would your principles dictate that you destroy something because you dislike one aspect of it?
